The Fine Red Wine of Melnik

Melnik is the smallest town in Bulgaria, known for its robust red wine, impressive old-style houses, and beautiful natural surroundings.

We arrived in the town and our first stop was for ceramic bowls filled with frozen sheep's yoghurt, honey and nuts. Delicious!

Above is the Konak, the abandoned former residence of the Turkish governor.

There is basically only one street in Melnik, and it follows a dry riverbed up the gully, with many places to eat and rent rooms in the colorful buildings.

We stopped for lunch accompanied by a big glass of the red wine that Melnik is famous for. There are many wineries in the region, and the wine was good, sending our heads spinning. We bought wine to take home as a reminder of our visit to the town.
